Media mock exam
Task one
To an extent I agree that the music
press remains popular due to it providing a reliable source of information to
the audience. Music press print such as; music magazines provide reliable
information in the magazine. Music press such as; online music press provides a
faster and a recently updated source of information. The music press provides
reliable information in many ways, such as through: interviews, pictures and
articles. Also, the audience enjoy reading about their favourite musicians, but
they also like to build their own personal relationships with their friends
that also read the magazine. However,
I agree that many readers enjoy reading about their favourite musicians as the
magazines feature exclusive interviews with bands and also the online music
press features exclusive news about the musicians. The music press publishing
articles and images featuring bands helps the audience to relate to the music
and also build personal relationships; not just with other readers, but with
the band or musician themselves. In addition, this helps the reader to build
their own personal identity, this could define their category in
psychographics, leading them to be mainstream, or an individualist, or even an
aspirer. Another reason for why the music press remains so popular is that the
readers enjoy interacting, either with letters to magazines or forums on
websites. A main reason for why the audience/reader enjoys interacting with
letters to magazines it that their opinion feels heard and allows them to
relate themselves with other readers, which helps to build personal
relationships. The excitement felt by the write to have their letter published
in a monthly edition of their favourite music magazine is phenomenal. The
readers of music magazines or music press on websites are able to communicate with
each other through forums, which again helps to build personal relationships
with other readers and the musician. I
agree that these reasons are the main reasons for why the music press remains
so popular. I believe this because through these points, the audience is able
to build own personal relationships, build their own personal identity, it
places them into a psychographic category and their opinion feels heard.
Task two
The
public have recently suggested that music magazines are generally aimed at male
readers, I agree with this statement to an extent. I agree that there are some
music magazines that are aimed at a male audience, such as Kerrang! Who have a
male readership of 57%, however Kerrang! Also have 16/20 of its magazine
editors being male; this could have an impact on the general aim of the target
audience’s gender. In addition to this, 10/16 of its photographers are male,
this also adds more of a male gender interest to the magazine. However, music magazines
such as Top of The Pops have a large majority of their readership being female,
with a 87% female readership. The genre of music featured in Kerrang! Is
different to Top of The Pops; despite that, this conveys how all music
magazines aren’t directly aimed at male readers. I agree that a large
proportion of music magazine are aimed at male readers, as NME have a male
readership of 66%. This portrays how some music magazines are mainly male dominated,
leading it to feature aspects in the magazine which would be more appealing to
men. This includes a February 2010 copy of NME which features ad sexualised
image of Cheryl Cold on the front cover. As well as some music magazines being
aimed largely at one gender, the music magazine Smash Hits was originally aimed
both, male and female readers. However, by 2006 when the magazine published its
last ever edition, the readership was largely female dominated. To
summarise, I agree that the majority of music magazines generally are aimed at
men, but there are some music magazines such as Top of the Pops which are aimed
at females.
Task three
I am
going to propose an exciting idea for a new music magazine. My music magazine
will be a Punk Rock genre ad will be: new; exciting; and modern. It will also
follow the uses and gratifications theory of building the readers personal
identity and personal relationships. The magazine will be aimed at aspirers but
will often feature some mainstream target aspects as well as individualists. I
would like to present you with an engaging title for my magazine which will be
called ‘PRM’ – with the R reversed, which adds a sense of rebellion to the
magazine. ‘PRM’ is an acronym for Punk Rock Musicians. This establishes the
genre of the magazine which would instantly appeal to the followers of the
genre. As the music magazine will have an acronym masthead, it will attract people
to find out more about the magazine. It is an exciting idea which will engage
many readers to the magazine. The
house style that I will use will be eye catching and very memorable for the
reader/audience. The colours that I shall use for the masthead will be Red as it
had connotations of rebellion but also excitement as it is very vibrant. The
magazine will follow a colour scheme of red, black, silver and white. These
colours follow the ideas of punk rock and will be appealing to the target
audience. The font that I will use on my magazine will be impact as it is very
bold and stands out. I think that the house style I have chosen established the
genre of punk rock and I would like to believe that I have selected the house
style wisely. The
main features which my magazine will include are: interviews with many
different bands and musicians of the genre Punk Rock or any sub genres from
that area. My magazine will feature a ‘write in’ section, where the
reader/audience of the magazine is able to write in to the magazine which would
be a letter including their thoughts and feelings, which would help to build
their own personal relationships with other readers. Another regular feature
that my magazine will include is a page which will feature all of the new
albums or upcoming tours/gigs. This helps to build the readers personal
relationships. Through these features, the magazine is appealing to the target psychographics
as by reading interviews, it establishes the aspirers. There
will be many aspects that my magazine will appeal to its target audience which
is; aspirers, unisex, aged 15-27, demographics A-C1. It will be appealing to my
target audience as it will feature many things that establish the genre of Punk
Rocks. My music magazine will also feature new medium, such as Twitter, a
website, and a blog, this appeals the readers who use new media.
